Brachytherapy

Increase in percentage of radiation pointed towards tumor, pre and post external radio-therapy gives local disorder control and this method is known as Brachytherapy. It could also be utilized for curative purposes, if the treatment is suitable for patient’s situation.

Unique methods are applied to place radioactive sources to tumor, with control over the radiation dose.

Radiation Oncology techniques used are:

  • IGRT : Image Guided Radiation Therapy
  • IMRT : Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy
  • Conformal Radiotherapy: 3D Conformal Radiotherapy
  • SRT / SRS : Stereotactic Radiotherapy / Stereotactic Radiosurgery

Fields of application for radiotherapy

Radio-therapy is placed in 2 groups, in accordance with the condition of the disease:

Curative Radiotherapy:

Applied in cases when disease can be fully treated, in accordance with available information. It could be performed with chemotherapy, surgery or alone.

Palliative Radiotherapy:

Used in circumstances when there is a good chance that disease will be fully cured. This is in particular helpful to the people who are suffering from serious illnes and the main goal is to prevent their suffering and raise quality of their lives to higher level. Radio-therapy can decrease pain for those patients suffering from bone pain. When radio-therapy is applied on hemorrahagic tumors, it can bring loss of blood under control. Differently than Curative Radio-therapy, this procedure takes less time to complete as well as the radiation level is smaller.
